Nestled within Southeast Louisiana near the border with Mississippi, lies one of the most scenic areas in the Southern U.S. 

East Feliciana Parish is one of the original plots of what became known as the “Florida Parishes”. Its rolling hills and lush greenery is a part of its beauty and mystique. But its hill country landscape set it apart from the flatlands most picture when they think of Louisiana. That terrain quietly shaped its entire history. The land was part of Spanish West Florida before the United States ever claimed it. Once the U.S. absorbed the territory, East Feliciana Parish itself was carved out in 1824, with Clinton established as its seat.

The parish became a magnet for cotton planters in the antebellum period, and the wealth that came with cotton left a visible mark – Clinton and the surrounding countryside is filled with a Greek Revival courthouse, churches, and plantation homes, many of which still stand today. That concentration of well-preserved 19th-century architecture is part of why the area later became a favorite backdrop for Hollywood films looking to shoot “the Old South.” While it also led to issues stemming from the history of the cotton trade itself, it also helped to ensure a diverse, culturally rich population that still exists. All of this worked to make East Feliciana Parish a beautiful place, both aesthetically and culturally speaking.

The Civil War and Reconstruction hit the parish hard, unraveling the cotton economy and reshaping the social order. In the decades after, the parish settled into a quieter, more agrarian rhythm — timber, cattle, and smaller-scale farming replacing the old cotton fortunes.

Today East Feliciana remains sparsely populated and populated and largely rural, prized by many Louisianians precisely for what it never became – its hills, oaks, and antebellum towns offering a slower, older version of the state, still visibly layered with the Spanish, French, African, German, and Anglo-American history that passed through it.

East Feliciana Parish is a history lover’s paradise. It is home to incredibly beautiful architecture, most notably the parish Courthouse in Clinton, Lawyers Row, Old Centenary College, Milbank, and many other treasures. The towns of Slaughter, Wilson, Ethel, and Norwood also offer a ton of history and beautiful architecture, not to mention historical sites built around the railroad.
